Once I Was A Worm

Once I Was A Worm

Once I was a worm
A worm amongst worms
A maggot
In writhing celebration
Of the feast
Once I was a crazy diamond
That could not shine
Buried beneath the earth
Once I was a lightning bug
Proving any lack of faith
To be unreal

Once I was a great basin
Bristlecone pine
That lived 13,000 years

Now I’m a human being
And o what a tangled
Newfangled web I weave
With a master’s eloquence
And a bastard’s poke
And spider sensitivity
Just made me think
When we were “the vitamins”
A boyhood band
That filled our days
When we were young
